4-day-old Baby Found In Cupboard

A midwife who left a baby face down in a stationery cupboard has been given a three-year caution order.

Yvonne Musonda-Malata, 35, left the four-day-old in the cupboard during a night shift at Queen's Hospital in Romford, east London, on 18 April 2011.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) found Ms Musonda-Malata had failed to provide appropriate clinical care.
The disciplinary panel imposed a sanction on the midwife after ruling her fitness to practise was impaired.
The hearing had heard the child's mother had a condition that made it important for her to get a good night's sleep and, as a result, the baby had been moved from beside her bed.
The panel heard that Ms Musonda-Malata had placed the child in a cot in the doorway of the cupboard after it became unsettled. She kept the door open but was then called away for 20 minutes.
Nursery nurse Alex Curtis said she had found the baby in the cupboard "lying on its tummy on its own".
Ms Musonda-Malata had denied the charge at the tribunal.
Colleague Christine Onade, who was accused of the same charge of failing to provide appropriate clinical care, was cleared by the NMC.
