The
Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) on
Wednesday advised the Federal Government against the planned sale of the
nation's refineries.
The Lagos Zonal Chairman of NUPENG, Mr Tokunbo
Korodo gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria
(NAN) in Lagos.
``The government should not sell the
refineries, rather they should bring in those who first built the
refineries for repairs and returned them to their original status," he
said.
He said that government should always ensure
that the turnaround maintenance of the refineries was done by those with
the technical knowhow.
He urged the government to open-up the market
and allow private sector participation, adding that the country would
then target the exportation of petroleum products.
Korodo advised the National Assembly to enact laws that would be favourable to the Nigerian workers.
He said that most Labour Laws were not in tandem with the conventions of the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
``Government should listen to the cries of Nigerians, they are not comfortable with the ways the labour laws are be implemented.
``The National Assembly should be more pro
active in their responsibilities and rise up to the occasion if truly
they are representative of the people.
``The people are crying, especially the
workforce, we need their intervention from the inhuman treatment and
anti-labour practices in the workplace,’’ he said.
The NUPENG chairman urged workers to always
strive to make the difference in wealth creation wherever they found
themselves. (NAN)
