#Bringbackourgirls: F.G, US slam Chief Of Defence

ABUJA—The United States said, yesterday, that it does not have information to support the claim by the Nigerian military that it knows the whereabouts of the more than 200 kidnapped schoolgirls.
The Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshall Alex Badeh said on Monday that the military knew the location of the schoolgirls, abducted by the Boko Haram Islamic sect on April 14.
U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters, yesterday, that, “we don’t have independent information from the United States to support that statement. We, as a matter of policy and for the girls’ safety and wellbeing, would not discuss publicly this sort of information regardless.”Badeh’s claim has also reportedly incurred the wrath of the Presidency.
Five U.S. and European security officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they had no credible information on the location of the girls and were skeptical that the Nigerian government knew where they were. The five officials said the United States and some European allies had provided technical intelligence, including information from spy aircraft and satellites, to Nigerian authorities, who lack such intelligence capabilities.
But the officials said that as far as they knew, technical intelligence systems had not produced precise or credible information establishing the girls’ location.
The five officials said that if the Nigerians had obtained such information from informants on the ground, it has not been shared with U.S. and allied agencies.
One impediment to finding the girls, the officials said, was that since their abduction, they had been divided into small groups. Boko Haram is also believed to be hiding them in densely forested terrain where it would be hard for modern technical intelligence systems to gather information.
Presidency angry with CDS
Meanwhile, Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, Air Marshal Alex Badeh, has reportedly incurred the wrath of the Presidency over his claim that the military has sighted the 270 schoolgirls seized from their dormitories in Chibok, Borno State by Boko Haram terrorists last month.
President Jonathan, it was learnt last night, was unhappy with the claim by the defence chief, which he considered as a breach of military tactics capable of hindering the move to free the children, who have been in the kidnappers’ den since last month.
Meanwhile, Air Marshal Badeh declared, yesterday, that the military was now fighting a bigger battle with the international terrorist organisation known as Al Qaeda with networks in North and West Africa, noting that the ongoing counter terrorism and counter insurgency war has gone beyond Boko Haram
A top Presidency source told Vanguard last night that Jonathan considered the CDS’ claim on the missing schoolgirls as an unnecessary outburst, which could frustrate ongoing efforts by the multinational team currently in the country to rescue the girls.
Counter-productive
The source, which did not want to be quoted, said President Jonathan was still at a loss as to why Badeh made the statement at a time he was expected to be more cautious over the contentious issue, which is generating interest across the globe.

Hundreds Of Skeletal Remains Found Along U.S.-Mexico Border

Mexican officials say hundreds of skeletal remains have been found scattered on ranches in a stretch of towns along the U.S.-Mexico border as police carried out a wide search to locate missing people.
Coahuila state prosecutors' spokesman Jesus Carranza said Monday that the remains were burned and extremely hard to identify.
Police have not said whether an organized crime group is suspected, but it's an area known to be dominated by the Zetas drug cartel.
The police operation took place on ranches of 11 different towns around the border city of Piedras Negras after interviews with family members and former local officials.
Investigators found bullet casings as well as barrels of diesel fuel at some of the farms likely used to burn bodies.

woman live-tweets husband's fatal auto accident

A Washington State woman who monitors police scanners live-tweeted a fatal car wreck Wednesday, growing increasingly frantic as she began to suspect that the victim was her own husband.
Caran Johnson, who live-tweets police activity in Vancouver, Wash., under the Twitter handle @ScanCouver, began following the accident on Interstate 205 near the Oregon state line about 2 p.m. (5 p.m. ET):
Very quickly, she began to fear the worst:
Concern and sympathy began pouring in from Johnson's followers as she stayed with the increasingly traumatic story:

  Kirstie Hayes @khayes1489
@ScanCouver I'm sending you positive thoughts right now. I truly hope he is ok. I exited at Paden Pkwy and didn't see anyone pulled over. :[

Less than two hours after she started, Johnson reported that the victim was, indeed, her husband, tweeting simply: "it's him. he died."
A trooper at the scene of a fatal car accident realized the victim's wife was live-tweeting her concerns and prevented pictures of the wreck from going out on social media so she could be informed of the tragedy in-person. KGW's Reggie Aqui reports.
The Washington State Patrol and Vancouver police confirmed that Craig R. Johnson, 47, was killed about 1:40 p.m. when his Hyundai Elantra crossed the median and collided with a pickup truck. The truck driver survived but was seriously injured.
Investigators said they didn't yet know what caused the accident, but Johnson tweeted that her husband had epilepsy and that he had told her he was feeling faint.

Humble-living Connecticut woman surprises town with millions from will

Kathleen Magowan lived a frugal life with her twin brother, Robert, in the classic New England town of Simsbury, Conn., until she died in 2011 at age 87, remembered mainly for the 35 years she was a first-grade teacher in the local elementary schools.
But now the town of 23,000 people is buzzing with the news that Magowan had a secret. A big one.
A $6 million one.
Nobody knew Kathleen Magowan was a multimillionaire until her will was finally untangled last month. That's when more than a dozen local institutions discovered they'd been left tens of thousands of dollars — sometimes hundreds of thousands — from her estate.

"Shock. Just shock." That was the reaction of Tara Donohue Willerup, a member of the Simsbury Board of Education, which Magowan left $480,000.
"She's exactly what you'd expect from first grade, you know — she loved the little kids," Willerup said. "That was where she really put her energies, because she built a foundation for them for their education for the rest of their lives."
When Kathleen Magowan asked her lawyer to help her arrange her will, both were shocked to learn that she was worth $6 million. But the biggest surprise was that felt by the neighbors and local charities who received it.
But almost a half-million dollars' worth?
"She was quiet, and you just couldn't believe that she'd have that kind of money to give," Willerup said.
That could be because Magowan herself probably couldn't believe it. Until the end, "she thought she had at that time approximately $40,000," said Lou George, a lawyer whom she asked to help settle her affairs.
As George looked into Magowan's finaces, he found blue-chip stocks like General Motors and General Electric — stocks that kept growing and growing and growing as her family held on to it for more than 50 years.
He found accounts with multiple financial institutions.
He found life insurance policies.
And he found a Quaker Oats box. It was stuffed with war bonds — mostly for $20 and $50 — dating to the 1940s.
"It did not look like a lot of money," George said. But it had been accumulating interest for more than a half-century — so much interest that the paper in the little Quaker Oats box was worth $183,000.
The Magowan twins' father, William, did very well as chief financial officer for an explosives company. They lived modestly and without dependents — neither ever married — and over the decades, they barely touched their inheritance, which Robert managed. In addition to Kathleen's $6 million estate, Robert left almost $4 million more when he died in 2010 at age 85.
"Money was not a priority to her," George said, and once Magowan learned how much she was worth, she was determined to give back "to the organizations and individuals who had helped her along the way or touched her life in some way."

One of those institutions is St. Mary's Catholic Church, whose priest, the Rev. Frank Matera, assumed the pulpit only last year. He'd never even heard of Kathleen Magowan until he was told his parish was getting $374,000 from her estate.
"When I heard that amount, I was just — I was literally astounded," Matera said. "I've never received a gift that large, and very rarely do parishes get a gift that size."
The bequest was "pure grace," he said: "We have to do some kind of building in the future, and this give us the basic start that we will need."
George said Magowan gave him a handwritten piece of paper with directions to distribute her estate. The University of St. Joseph in West Hartford, where she graduated in 1947, got more than $500,000. Her nursing home got $419,000.
And it might not stop there. Just recently, George found a check from Prudential for an account he hadn't previously known about.
So he called the company. It turns out, he said, that "there's an account out there with stock in it that's valued at over $90,000."

MSNBC host Martin Bashir resigns over Palin remarks

MSNBC host Martin Bashir resigned Wednesday following controversy surrounding remarks he made on his show in November about former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
"Upon further reflection, and after meeting with the president of MSNBC, I have tendered my resignation," Bashir said in a statement. "It is my sincere hope that all of my colleagues, at this special network, will be allowed to focus on the issues that matter without the distraction of myself or my ill-judged comments."
In a segment that aired on his show in November, Bashir called Palin a "world class idiot" after she equated the United States borrowing money from China with slavery.
Citing a diary item describing various punishments for slaves, Bashir suggested that Palin should be forced to eat excrement.
The host later apologized on air for his remarks and took a leave of absence.
“I deeply regret what was said, will endeavor to work hard at making constructive contributions in the future and will always have a deep appreciation for our viewers – who are the smartest, most compassionate and discerning of all television audiences," Bashir said in his statement Wednesday.
MSNBC President Phil Griffin said in a statement: "I understand his decision and I thank him for three great years with MSNBC. Martin is a good man and respected colleague — we wish him only the best.”
MSNBC and NBC News belong to the same group.

Philip Chism, 14, is accused of murdering teacher Colleen Ritzer, 24.
Philip Chism, accused in the Oct. 22 slaying of Colleen Ritzer, 24, is facing murder, aggravated rape and armed robbery charges.
Chism, who is charged with murder as an adult, appeared stoic during his court appearance just after 2 p.m. Wednesday, which ran for just 15 minutes.
Ritzer, a beloved teacher at Danvers High School, was discovered in the woods near the school along with a note reading: "I hate you all."
She was naked from the waist down and her body had been "sexually staged," according to court documents released last month.

A law enforcement source told NBC News that Ritzer's throat was slit from the back with a box-cutter in a second-floor bathroom at the school. Her body was then taken from the campus in a recycling bin, dumped in the woods and covered with leaves, the source said.
Chism had already pleaded not guilty in district court, but the gruesome case was transferred to Superior Court after he was indicted in November, according to the Associated Press. His attorney consented Wednesday to a prosecution request that he remain held without bail.
Authorities have yet to disclose a motive for the teacher's brutal murder.
Chism's attorney has declined to comment, according to the AP.

Girls were imprisoned in bedrooms for two years: Arizona police

An Arizona mother and stepfather were being held on kidnapping and child abuse charges Tuesday for allegedly imprisoning their three girls — who were found malnourished in a filthy home and hadn't bathed in months, police said.
Tucson police said officers responding to a 911 call found two girls, 12 and 13 years old, at a neighbor’s house at about 4 a.m. Tuesday. The girls told officers they had escaped their home after their stepdad kicked in the door to their bedroom and attempted to attack them with a knife, police said.
The girls also said, according to police, they had been held prisoners in the bedroom they shared for about two years.
When officers went to the house they discovered their sister, 17, locked in another bedroom, police said.
At a news conference on Tuesday night, Tucson police Capt. Mike Gillooly said all three of the girls were extremely dirty and malnourished and stated they said they had not bathed in several months.
“It was alleged by the little girls that they had been imprisoned  in their bedrooms for approximately the last two years,” Gillooly said.
“They were kept in filthy living conditions and alleged only being fed once a day,” said a Tucson police statement.
The stepfather,  Fernando Richter, 34, was booked into the Pima County Jail in Tucson on charges of kidnapping, sexual abuse of a minor and physical and emotional child abuse.
The mother, identified as 32-year-old Sophia Richter, is also charged with kidnapping and both physical and emotional child abuse.
The three girls were removed from the home.

Pet dog blamed for starting fire that displaces Arizona family

A fire that severely damaged an apartment Tuesday in Tucson, Ariz., was blamed on the family dog.
It took nine fire units to put out the blaze, which left the family of three at least temporarily homeless, fire officials said.
The family wasn't home Tuesday morning, but the dog was, Tucson fire Capt. Barrett Baker told NBC station KVOA of Tucson.
Some time before 9 a.m., the dog — whose breed and name weren't disclosed — got curious and began trying to jump up on the kitchen counter, fire officials said. Its paw hit a knob on the family's gas stove, lighting one of the burners. That, in turn, ignited flammable materials on the stove, which family members told investigators they rarely used.

There was no immediate damage assessment, and no one — including the dog or any of the 23 firefighters who put out the fire in less than 15 minutes — was injured. The Red Cross was trying to find a new home for the family.
It's not the first time a dog has been fingered as a firebug. In October, a Labrador trying to get at some snacks on the stove ignited a kitchen fire exactly the same way in Wenatchee, Wash., causing $10,000 in damage.

'Top Gun' inspiration becomes highest-ranking woman at Pentagon

President Barack Obama appointed Christine Fox as acting deputy defense secretary Tuesday, making the civilian analyst — who inspired Kelly McGillis' character in "Top Gun" — the highest-ranking woman ever at the Pentagon.
Fox replaces Ashton Carter, who is stepping down Wednesday. Fox, who had been director of cost controls at the Pentagon before she left for the academic world over the summer, has remained an unpaid consultant to Carter since then.
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Fox would serve "pending the nomination and confirmation of a permanent successor" as his top deputy — an acknowledgment that Senate Republicans could stall the permanent nomination over the so-called nuclear option, the new rules put in place by Democrats to speed up approval of judicial appointments.

In a statement, Hagel called Fox "a brilliant defense thinker and proven manager" who "knows the intricacies of the Department's budget, programs and global operations better than anyone."
A senior defense official told NBC News that Fox would be able to "hit the ground running like no one else can."
"Simply put, no one knows the issues as well as Christine," the official said.

Fox may be better known to the public as the model for Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood, the civilian flight instructor who catches Tom Cruise's eye in the 1986 movie "Top Gun." Fox, former president of the Center for Naval Analysis, helped McGillis prepare for the role.>
Fox told People magazine in 1985, as the movie was in production, that she herself wasn't a fighter pilot but that she worked closely with them as a specialist in air and maritime defense.
"I don't know anything about flying airplanes, but I know a lot about the guy in the back seat — his mission, his radar and his missiles," she said at the time.

Girl,13, Taken Into Custody After Dozing Off In Dance Instructor's Car

A dance student from Tulsa, Okla., on a trip to Houston was taken into custody on Saturday after she was discovered in her instructor's car.
Landry Thompson, 13, was visiting Houston with her dance instructor, Emmanuel Hurd, to take a series of dance classes from top industry professionals.
On the way back to their hotel with Thompson and another dancer, Hurd, who also goes by the name Emmanuel Cross, stopped at a gas station to get his bearings.
Landry Thompson"We were on the GPS trying to figure out where the hotel was and we sat there and we dozed off," Hurd said, according to NewsOn6.com.
Then, the police showed up and surrounded Hurd's car.
"They just pulled us out of the car. Put our hands behind our backs like we were criminals," Hurd said. "He asked me who's the girl. She's my student. I said I had a notarized letter from her parents stating that we have full guardianship over her while we're here."
Thompson and Hurd kept trying to tell their story, but said the officers weren't listening. Nor did they pay attention to the note. Instead, they put cuffs on Thompson and took her to Child Protective Services, and contacted her mother, Destiny Thompson, back in Tulsa.
“I was horrified,” Destiny Thompson told KHOU-TV. “She was with the people I wanted her to be with. She was with people I trusted. And now she was taken away from those people and in a shelter with people I didn’t know.”
At first, Thompson was told she'd have to come to Houston to get her daughter. After 11 hours, and repeated conversations with Houston officials, the teenager was finally freed into Hurd's custody.
Both Destiny and Landry would like an apology, but the Houston Police Department has yet to comment on the incident.

Obama's Kenyan-born uncle allowed to remain in US

President Barack Obama's Kenyan-born uncle, who ignored a deportation order more than two decades ago, was granted permission to stay in the U.S. on Tuesday.
Judge Leonard Shapiro made the decision after Onyango Obama, 69, testified that he had lived in the U.S. for 50 years, been a hard worker, paid income tax and been arrested only once.
Asked about his family in the U.S. on Tuesday, he said, "I do have a nephew." Asked to name the nephew, he said, "Barack Obama, he's the president of the United States."
Onyango Obama, the half brother of the president's late father, has lived in the U.S. since the 1960s. He was ordered to leave the country in 1992, but remained.
Shapiro cited a law that entitles immigrants who are "out of status" to become permanent residents if they arrived in the U.S. before 1972, maintained continuous residence and are of good moral character.  Onyango Obama testified he came to the U.S. from his native Kenya in 1963 and has not been back since. He called America the "land of opportunities."
His immigration status did not become public until his arrest for drunken driving in 2011 in Framingham, just west of Boston. After his arrest, he allegedly told police, "I think I will call the White House."
Asked about the exchange by a prosecutor Tuesday, he said he might have said that, but he couldn't recall.
Earlier this year, the Board of Immigration Appeals sent the case to the Executive Office for Immigration Review for reassessment.
Margaret Wong, Obama's Cleveland-based immigration attorney, called him a "wonderful older gentleman."
"He has earned his privilege to stay in the United States. He has been here for 50 years," she said Tuesday before the hearing.
The White House said it expected the case to be handled like any other immigration case.
In the drunken driving case, Obama admitted to sufficient facts, meaning he did not plead guilty but acknowledged prosecutors had enough evidence to convict him. A judge continued the case for one year without a finding, saying the charge would be dismissed if Obama did not get arrested again during that time. Wong said Obama has successfully completed that program.
In the president's memoir, "Dreams from My Father," he writes about his 1988 trip to Kenya and refers to an Uncle Omar, who matches Onyango Obama's background and has the same date of birth.
He is the second Obama family member to be found living illegally in the United States. His sister and the president's aunt, Zeituni Onyango, was granted asylum in 2010 after her first asylum request in 2002 was rejected and she was ordered deported in 2004.
She did not leave the country and continued to live in public housing in Boston. Her status was revealed just days before Obama was elected in November 2008. At the time, then-candidate Obama said he did not know his aunt was living here illegally and that he believes laws covering the situation should be followed.

Student Sets Teacher on fire
A Tennessee high school teacher was set on fire by one of her students, cops said.
WATE reports that Gabriela Penalba, 23, turned her back to her class on Monday morning at West High School in Knoxville when a 15-year-old male student set her hair and shirt ablaze using his lighter, police said.
Students quickly put the fire out.
Gawker notes that the student allegedly "exploited the commotion" by throwing the lighter out the window and fleeing before being captured by police.
The quick thinking of her students helped Penalba avoid any burns, according to WBIR.

Bride Loses Husband And Leg After Honeymoon Car Crash

car
A bride is recovering in hospital after she was in a horrific car crash on her way back from her honeymoon that killed her husband and left her with one leg amputated.
Tasha Bradford exchanged vows with 19-year-old Sylvester Storey on October 19, just nine days before the car crash. The Florida based couple were married in Panama City, before they then headed to the Tennessee mountains for their honeymoon.
The duo returned to Florida on October 27, but as they were driving through La Grange, Georgia, in the early hours of the morning they were involved in an accident on Interstate 85.
Sylvester was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision, while 31-year-old Bradford was airlifted to Grady Hospital in Atlanta. However doctors were forced to amputate her right leg, and they also took out a part of her damaged colon too.
Tasha’s sister-in-law, Tori Cooper, updated WMBB about Bradford’s condition, stating, “The day that we got there, she was swollen. She had a neck brace. She had tubes in her mouth. She couldn’t even speak.”
Bradford has since started to make a miraculous recovery, and she has even remained tremendously upbeat despite the tragedy.
The widow has stated that she is blessed, and she has now explained that a dream she had in intensive care featured her dead husband who spoke to her at the scene of the crash that killed him.
She continued, “He said, ‘I can’t stay, but I just want to tell you goodbye, and I love you.’ God has a greater plan than I’ll ever know. I know with time and healing, he’ll send someone my way who will love me for me.”
It’s still not exactly known what happened that lead to the car crash. Tasha was having a sleep in the backseat of the car when the incident occurred, and she admitted that the last words her new husband said to her were, “I love you.”
After the collision, Tasha woke up inside the car and immediately recognised that her leg was severely injured. She was then assisted out from the vehicle by several good samaritans. Tasha only found out that her husband had died when she arrived at the hospital.
Mrs Storey recalled, “I knew God had his side because he was such a good, Christian man. I had no doubt where he was going to go.”
A GoFundMe page has since been set up to try and raise funds for Tasha’s medical expenses, as well as to try and help pay for Sylvester’s funeral. It has so far managed to raise over $18,000.

Inmate, Brutally Killed Cell Mate To Stay In Prison

An Arizona prison inmate who was approaching his release date apparently didn't want to leave, so killed his cell mate to keep staying in prison, cops said.
Roberto Venegas Fernandez, 43, is accused of brutally murdering 55-year-old Michael Patrick McNaughton on Saturday, KPHO reported.
Sheriff Paul Babeu said Fernandez choked, then stomped McNaughton to death, according to the Associated Press.
"Roberto wanted to find a way to stay in jail, so while the victim was sitting on his bed, he choked him until he fell onto the ground, then stomped on his head and continued to choke the victim until he was presumed dead," Babeu said in a statement.
Although investigators initially thought the killing stemmed from a fight between the two cell mates, Fernandez reportedly told detectives that he enjoyed being in prison, and didn't want to be released because he had nowhere else to go.
According to WFSP, Fernandez -- originally from Mexico -- was convicted for committing a sex crime in the U.S.
Fernandez's victim, McNaughton, was sentenced to more than 6 years in prison after pleading guilty to a child pornography charge.
Pinal County Sheriff's Office Spokesman Tim Gaffney said the sheriff's office was asking that a first-degree murder charged be filed against the suspect.

Teen Football Captain, Accused Of Fatally Stabbing 27-Year-Old Male Lover

Teen football captain Tarence Mitchell was arrested in Connecticut this week following the death of a 27-year-old Bloomfield man.
The 18-year-old is accused of fatally stabbing Ronald Taylor, Jr., who he had a sexual relationship with, court documents reveal. According to WFSB, police say Taylor was stabbed five times in the back with a steak knife outside Mitchell's home Thursday night.
Though Mitchell initially told police that the two were attacked by a pair of hooded men, he later relented and confessed to police that he perpetrated the crime. He has since been charged with murder.
According to The Hartford Courant, Mitchell revealed to police that he had met Taylor two years ago through his stepmother and frequently visited his house, where Taylor supplied the teen with alcohol and marijuana. While Mitchell said he was interested in being friends, he told police Taylor wanted a different kind of relationship.
Mitchell told police that he was trying to distance himself from Taylor, and Taylor once posted a photo of Mitchell on Facebook with the caption "Bloomfield gay football player." Though the photo was taken down, Mitchell told authorities that Taylor had threatened to repost it if Mitchell tried to disassociate himself again.
On Thursday, Taylor texted Mitchell, allegedly telling the teen that he was coming over and it "wasn't going to end well," NBC Connecticut reports.
Mitchell told police he felt threatened and armed himself with a knife. He allegedly stabbed Taylor after the 27-year-old punched him in the face. Police say Taylor tried to run away, but Mitchell chased him down and delivered the fatal stabbings. After police responded, Taylor was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Mitchell, who has no previous arrests, is currently being held on $1 million bond. He is due back in court in early December.

Man, 68, shoots 22-year-old after finding him in bed with his 63-year-old wife

A 22-year-old is lucky to be alive after he was caught sleeping with a married woman.

Stephen Trevor Chapman, 22, of Arizona, was shot by a 68-year-old man on Saturday morning, after he was found sleeping with the old man’s wife, police said.

The Pinal County Sheriff’s office said that officers were called to a shooting at 1:00 a.m. on Saturday, at the Saddlebrooke adult community in Tucson.

“The 68-year-old man found his 63-year-old wife and Chapman, sleeping together in his guest house. The man, who suffers from Parkinson's disease, woke up Chapman by poking him with a cane and told him to leave,” Pinal County Sheriff’s office spokesperson Tim Gaffney said.

Chapman began yelling obscenities and refused to leave the residence. The old man told police that Chapman charged at him, and at that point he feared for his life, therefore, he fired a "warning shot" with his shotgun.

The bullet hit a nearby wall and Chapman received a minor injury to his hand.

"This was an unusual call for the active senior community. Clearly, this young man should have heeded the warnings of the homeowner to leave his residence and stop sleeping with his wife," Sheriff Paul Babeu said.

“The young man is lucky that he only got poked with the cane and hit with a stray pellet from the shotgun,” he also said.

Chapman was booked into the Pinal County jail on a charge of disorderly conduct. The case was submitted to the Office of the Pinal County Attorney for review. More charges are possible.

Police: Yale campus safe, no gunman found

New Haven authorities say they have not found a gunman on Yale's campus and are leaning toward a call warning of an armed man heading to shoot up the school being a hoax.
New Haven Police Chief Dean Esserman said at a news conference Monday afternoon that New Haven and the Yale campus are both safe.
A lockdown remains in effect on the Old Campus as police search rooms to confirm that no gunman is on campus.
There have been no reports of shots fired or anyone injured and no arrests have been made.
New Haven police Officer David Hartman says an anonymous caller from a pay phone nearby told them his roommate had a gun and was heading to the campus.
