Creigh Deeds hospitalized, 1 dead at home
Virginia State Sen. Creigh Deeds has been hospitalized after sustaining serious injuries following an assault at his home Tuesday morning, law enforcement officials have confirmed.
Virginia State Police issued a statement confirming that an assault took place Tuesday morning at Deeds’s home in Bath County, Va., and that the senator was flown to University of Virgina Hospital in Charlottesville for treatment. A second individual at the scene is deceased.
The statement also said that law enforcement arrived on the scene at 7:25 a.m. Tuesday morning.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch, who broke the news, reported that Deeds, the former Democratic gubernatorial and attorney general candidate, is in critical condition after being stabbed and that his son was fatally shot during the incident.
The Associated Press reports that police have not identified the dead person found in Deeds’ home or released details about the assault. Police planned to hold a news conference at noon.
As news broke, politicians from across Virginia, as well as nationwide, took to Twitter to send their thoughts and prayers to the senator and his family.
